Service Description:

This dataset was obtained through the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). ICES is a global organization that develops science and advice to support the sustainable use of the oceans. For more information on ICES please visit https://www.ices.dk/Pages/default.aspx

The dataset is a layer within a series of datasets created by ICES in response to a request from the OSPAR Commission to create spatial data layers of fishing intensity/pressure. OSPAR is the mechanism by which 15 Governments & the EU cooperate to protect the marine environment of the North-East Atlantic. For more information on OSPAR please visit https://www.ospar.org/

The ICES Secretariat collected relevant Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) and logbook data to produce, as a technical service to OSPAR, spatial data layers on fishing intensity/pressure to help OSPAR assess benthic impact.  The focus was on Mobile Bottom Contacting Gears. The background to the creation of these datasets and the full methodology can be found at https://www.ices.dk/sites/pub/Publication%20Reports/Advice/2017/Special_requests/OSPAR.2017.17.pdf

Layer 'OSPAR_intensity_OT_CRU_2016' was  downloaded from https://doi.org/10.17895/ices.pub.2861 . The layer was then clipped to the Irish Sea for the purposes of the Supporting the Implementation of Marine Spatial Planning in the Celtic Sea (SIMCelt) Project. For more information on SIMCelt plese visit https://www.simcelt.eu/. This layer is shown in the SIMCelt Ecosystems Services Case Study Storymap. The values have been displayed using Standard Deviation. The purpose of the map is to show the distribution of Nephrops fishing intensity across the Irish Sea for the purposes of the SIMCelt Project. The correct and appropriate data interpretation is solely the responsibility of data user.

The OSPAR request was only focused on the fishing abrasion layers underpinning the OSPAR Extent of Physical Damage Marine Strategy Framework Directive MSFD Indicator. More information on MSFD can be found at https://ec.europa.eu/environment/marine/eu-coast-and-marine-policy/marine-strategy-framework-directive/index_en.htm

Results, conclusions, and/or recommendations derived from the data do not imply endorsement from ICES.
